Desperate to fit in, I attempted my hardest in order to blend in with the peers. I immersed myself in soccer and baseball, deriving all my value within being a jock — the opposite of your regular Asian American. Sadly, I also looked upon other Asian children who weren’t as American as me personally, sparingly ate Chinese food, and did not like inviting my friends over because I was scared they’d believe my house smelled weird. In a nutshell, I was embarrassed to be Asian.
This mentality bled to college, where I studied economics plus business, played baseball, and joined a fraternity — all of which a typical Asian United states wouldn’t do. As being a senior, I made a decision to study abroad within Scotland, and my goal was to befriend as many lads and lasses from over the pond. But by the end of the semester, barely any of my friends had been European. And not one of them were American. Most of them were actually hard anodized cookware.
